Duke Gardens, Durham NC - Click to visit our NC Photos pageDurham, North Carolina might well be called “the city with many names” based on the city’s varied claims to fame throughout its rich history.  Many know Durham as the “twin” to Raleigh, North Carolina because the region is often referred to as Raleigh / Durham.  While the two cities enjoy the same year round temperate weather, charming southern hospitality and bountiful resources (including the nearby majestic Blue Ridge Mountains and the Atlantic Ocean), each city has a distinctive personality and flavor.  Raleigh is located in Wake County; Durham lies in Durham County.  In May, 2005, Forbes.com rated Raleigh-Durham number two in its Best Places For Business And Careers.

Prior to being named “Durham” after the area’s beloved Doctor Bartlett Durham in the mid 1800’s, early explorer John Lawson referred to Durham as “the flower of the Carolinas.”  Even then, inhabited by the industrious Eno and Occoneechi Indians, who contributed to Durham’s enduring southern customs and culture, Durham enjoyed planned use of its abundant natural resources and development of settlement sites and transportation routes.
 
In later years Durham found yet another nickname, the “Bull City”, becoming internationally known for its famous Bull Durham tobacco.   Eventually, the rich, fragrant tobacco spawned one of the world’s largest corporations, a conglomerate including tobacco manufacturers American Tobacco, Liggett & Meyers, R.J. Reynolds and P. Lorillard.
 
Durham Centre - Downtown - Click to visit our Durham and NC Photos pageDurham is also a city of change and flexibility, always with its eyes to the future.  By the 1950’s Durham refocused, no longer looking for its strength in the thriving textile and tobacco industries.  To avoid losing the many bright young entrepreneurs graduating from the area’s fine universities, Durham looked to the future and laid the first foundational plans for a large medical research park, known today as Triangle Research Park.

Returning to medical roots created by the area residents’ fondness for young Dr. Durham many years prior,  the City of Durham again become synonymous with medicine, as it positioned itself for future economic survival and prosperity.  Durham’s new nickname, City of Medicine USA, symbolizes the area’s leading-edge hospitals, specialty clinical services, technological astute research companies, nationally recognized medical teaching facilities and major national and international healthcare companies.  Medicine leads the city's industry with one in four people in Durham working in a health-related field in more than 300 medical and health-related companies and medical practices with a combined payroll that exceeds $1.5 billion annually.

 
Durham enjoys a physician-to-population ratio four times greater than the national average. There are more than 2,300 licensed physicians and interns in Durham providing hospitalized care to more than 15,622 people and outpatient services to more than 727,500 annually.  Durham also is home to Quintiles Transnational, the world’s largest Clinical Research Organization.  The well-known Research Triangle Park, home to many of the medical facilities and training centers, is flanked on three sides by the City Durham.

Listed as one of the most desirable places to live in the USA and one of America’s finest mid-sized cities, the many diverse layers of Durham create a unique identity for the city.  Residents and businesses enjoy a city large enough for professional sports teams, in-depth infrastructure amenities and trained work force, while discovering the true meaning of hometown friendliness and hospitality.  Businesses thrive as Durham focuses on business innovation and rewards ingenious entrepreneurs.
